The Ion Pure is a compact air purifying device that’s sold directly to customers through various online ads.

Its creators claim that this easy to use plug-in air purification system can rid your home of dangerous air pollutants along with foul odors.

Below we take an in depth look into the IonPure, review the product specs, the science of air ionizers in general, analyze IonPure customer reviews, and let you know our top picks for improving your home’s air quality.

How Do Air Ionizers Work?

In contrast to standard HEPA air filters, air ionizers use negative ions to keep specific airborne particulates out of the air you breathe.

Air ions are invisible electrically charged molecules that exist in the atmosphere.  Negative air ions are those that have gained an electron and positive air ions are ones that have lost an electron. [1]

When an air ionizer device releases negative ions into the air they bind with tiny particles giving them an electric charge and clumping them together.

Those clumps then fall out of the air, landing on surfaces, walls, and ceilings where they can eventually be cleaned up.

Air ionizers have grown in popularity in recent years, with many product developers incorporating them into standard HEPA (high-efficiency particulate absorbing) air filters to boost their effectiveness.

Pros and Cons of Air Ionizers

Pros

  • Can help make air feel fresher
  • Reduce odors
  • Inhibit viruses and bacteria
  • Lower stress
  • Promote better sleep
  • Improve mood
  • Cheaper to operate since there are no filters to replace [2, 3, 4]

Cons

Air Ionizers work best on small particulates, which means that larger particles like dander, dust, and pollen may remain in the air.

This may be problematic for those with asthma or allergies.

According to the EPA air ionizers are not effective against indoor pollutants like VOC gasses.

One of the hidden drawbacks of air ionizers is that they emit ozone, the same gas that's responsible for inactivating viruses but can also cause negative health effects when breathed in.

Health effects from breathing in ozone include, throat irritation, coughing, difficulties breathing, and chest pain.

Prolonged exposure may lead to more serious issues like worsening asthma, respiratory infection, and lung inflammation.

Bottom Line

In certain situations air ionizers may be the right tool for air purification, but for basic at home air filtration a stand alone air ionizer (with no HEPA filter) is not recommended.

While these devices may be able to rid the air of viruses and smoke, they come with drawbacks as pointed out by the EPA which states,

“Although ozone can be used in reducing odors and pollutants in unoccupied spaces… the levels needed to achieve this are above those generally thought to be safe for humans.”

Red Flags for Ion Pure

Aside from the issues with air ionizing technology there are some other concerns with the company behind this product.

Some red flags include:

1.  No real company address  -  The address provided on the website belongs to an importing warehouse.

2.  Rebranded product  -  The Ion Pure Air Purifier is a rebranded dropship product.

Below you can see an identical looking product being sold for much cheaper in bulk on the Chinese marketplace website Alibaba, where it is being sold for under $10 per unit.

The seller of the Ion Pure likely bought such units in bulk, rebranded them with their own logo, and resells them at a higher price.

3.  No real customer reviews  -  The only online search results for Ion Pure are from websites set up specifically to promote the product.

There have been previous versions of this product on the market sold under the name of "Breathe Green Plug N’ Pure".

The Breathe Green has a customer rating of 3.8/5 from over 400 customer ratings.

In our experience reviewing products, companies that change the name of their product often do so to avoid accruing negative customer reviews.

4.  Likely a cheap product  -  The seller's address and warehouse are associated with other poorly reviewed cheap drop-shipped products such as the alpha heater.

Competitors and Alternatives

A popular air ionizer purifier that Ion Pure is often compared against is the Clarifion Air Purifier.

The Clarifion unit is much more powerful than Ion Pure with an output of 10 Million pcs/cm^3 and the ability to cover up to 150sqft.

Clarifion is also based in the US and has an active customer service team that addresses customer issues and complaints.

The Clarifion Air Purifier is available on Amazon, at the same price as Ion Pure, where it currently has a rating of 3.9/5 from over 10k customer reviews.

On Reviewopedia, the Clarifion has a rating of 1/5 from 25 mostly negative customer reviews.

While we believe the Clarifion is a better option than the Ion Pure, we would not recommend it to those looking for an air purifier.

Top Picks

1.  Coway Airmega AP-1512HH(W) True HEPA Purifier

This unit has been consistently selected by the NY Times product research team as the best air purifier.

It features 4 stages of filtration including a manual selection for ion purification for those that want it.

It filters pollen, pollutants, other allergens and can reduce volatile organic compounds and odor.

On Amazon it has an impressive score of 4.7/5 stars from 12,844 customer ratings.  Check Current Price.

2.  Honeywell True HEPA Allergen Air Purifier

The Honeywell is also a good option as it cleans the air in your home up to five times per hour.

It has excellent reviews, receiving a rating of 4.7/5 stars from nearly 30,000 customer reviews on Amazon.

It also comes in 3 different sizes allowing you to get the perfect fit for your space.  Check Current Price.

Bottom Line

As more regions face worsening air quality due to wildfires and pollution, air purifiers are becoming a more necessary appliance.

Furthermore, since poor indoor air can negatively impact breathing, agitate allergies, and negatively impact other health factors, it's important to select a proper unit.

We do not believe that the Ion Pure is the best option on the market.

In general, the benefits of Air Ionizers vs their risks have been put into question by many organizations.  There’s also very little actual user feedback available for the Ion Pure specifically.

For these reasons, we recommend purchasing an effective HEPA filter from a trusted brand as you’ll be getting proven technology along with guaranteed customer service, should you have any issues.

Scam! Stay away from Ionpure and AirGenie. Garbage products and almost impossible to get your money refunded. Then they want you to pay for return shipping to China!

Poor customer service.

I ordered an ionpure and the site offered multiple additional products. I kept clicking no until one offer refused to let me click no. I tried repeatedly to do so to no avail. I got a confirmation of order with the extra item which I did not want. Seven minutes later I sent an email requesting that the order be cancelled. I have contacted the company 7 times with no resolution. Seems to be a dishonest company.
