ProDentim is a dietary supplement claimed to be a novel solution for treating dental disease and promoting overall health.

ProDentim advertisements feature an engaging presentation from Dr. Drew Sutton in which he explains his findings about the root causes of most oral health issues.

Dr. Sutton believes that most dental procedures and over the counter treatments are only addressing symptoms and not dealing with the root causes of many peoples’ dental problems.

He believes that the issues start with an imbalance of bacteria in the mouth, something referred to as the oral microbiome.

Similar to your gut microbiome the oral microbiome contains billions of bacteria that provide a wide range of functions.

Much like in general medicine where the importance of the gut biome has been discussed for its effects on non gut related health issues, Dr. Sutton believes that imbalance in the oral biome is also responsible for much more than bad breath and gum disease.

Below we take a closer look at ProDentim to see if it really is a holistic solution that can address the wide range of issues claimed in the presentation.

How Does ProDentim Work?

According to Dr. Sutton, an imbalance in your oral microbiome can lead to a host of issues such as:

  • Sinus problems
  • Allergies
  • Brain fog
  • Inflammation
  • Bleeding gums
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Weight gain
  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Bad breath
  • Toothaches
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia

Sometimes more serious issues can arise, such as:

  • IBS
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Respiratory infections
  • And memory disorders

While this may sound alarmist, there is actual research supporting many of these connections.  If you have bad bacteria in your mouth it can spread through your body via several pathways.

For example, it can be swallowed in your saliva and travel down to your stomach or enter your bloodstream through your mouth.  Those with chronic gum disease may be passing even more bacteria into their bloodstream.

New research has been linking certain mouth bacteria to:

Dr. Sutton goes on to say that bad bacteria in your mouth can also be the inadvertent result of many of today’s popular dental hygiene products that may be responsible for killing too much of the good bacteria that prevents bad bacteria from thriving.

Sutton advocates that in addition to using ProDentim, you should get rid of dental products that have the following ingredients:

  • sodium lauryl sulfate
  • sodium fluoride
  • triclosan
  • artificial sweeteners -sodium saccharin aspartame, erythritol, xylitol
  • artificial dyes
  • propylene glycol
  • diethanolamine DEA
  • microplastics
  • abrasives
  • hydrated silica
  • mouthwash
  • alcohol
  • chlorhexidine

There is medical research supporting some of these statements.

While fluoride is prevalent in most over-the-counter toothpastes, many health conscious users are now switching to all natural and fluoride-free options.

Fluoride is used for its tooth decay and cavity preventative benefits.  However, some studies show that it can be disruptive to the gut microbiota in high doses.

Research on the effects of triclosan on mice has shown its ability to “... wreak havoc in the gut.”

Furthermore, the ProDentim video states that there are other factors that can negatively affect your dental health, such as stress or consuming too much salt.

Overall, Dr. Sutton lays out a fairly compelling argument for this holistic approach to dental care.

Many people are already taking steps to remove toxic chemicals from their cleaning and beauty products, so it makes sense to more closely consider what’s in something that we put in our mouths daily.

ProDentim Ingredients

Below we’ll take a look at how the ingredients in this product work, and if there is indeed research to support the company’s claims.

In the promotional video Dr. Sutton states that instead of a dental hygiene practice that focuses on killing bad germs, people should invest in one that focuses on introducing more healthy bacteria into the oral biome.

According to Dr Sutton, ProDentim contains a unique blend of probiotics that are specifically targeted to support oral health and can survive after being introduced into the mouth.

These probiotics include the following strains:

Lactobacillus reuteri  -  There are studies showing the potential of this probiotic in treating dental problems due to their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

With one study showing that a treatment of a Lactobacillus reuteri containing probiotic lozenge in addition to scaling and root planing provided better results for treating chronic periodontitis by suppressing the growth of periodontal pathogens vs the placebo.

Lactobacillus paracasei  -  Another strain that has been studied for its reduction of harmful oral bacteria along with preventive effects on tooth decay and cavities.

Bifidobacterium lactis  -  This strain has also been studied in conjunction with oral health.

One meta study found that it appears to “...help improve clinical periodontal parameters and develop a healthy plaque microbiome…”.  The study also concluded that more human studies are needed.

Additional research does support some of these findings, with other studies showing this strain's positive effects on gingival health and its potential as a complementary treatment option.

Salivarius A2  -  There are preliminary studies showing strains of Lactobacillus salivarius being helpful in protection against oral infection and cavity prevention.

The seller states that there are roughly 3.5 billion of these helpful probiotics in the ProDentim formula.  Additional ingredients include: inulin, strawberry flavor, dicalcium phosphate, peppermint, and spearmint.

These are combined into an easy to chew probiotic chewable that softly melts in the mouth.

Overall, there is promising research on these probiotic strain.

However, it’s important to distinguish that these findings do not necessarily correlate with, or are indicative of, any results from using ProDentim.  There are no trials specifically done on ProDentim.

ProDentim Reviews & Complaints

At this time it’s difficult to find legitimate customer reviews from customers who have used ProDentim.  Google’s search results are overrun with websites prompting this product and PR sites used to crowd out any real reports.

Though after dig deep enough you can find some legitimate feedback on a few consumer review websites.

On those websites users report a mix of results, with a bulk stating that they did not see any difference after using the product.

Many customers did comment that they enjoyed the video presentation and found the information helpful in changing their thinking about dental health.

Others mentioned that the oral probiotic market is expanding quickly and that there are a growing number of alternative products.

Additionally a few reviewers mentioned issues with product delivery.

Potential Red Flags

In addition to the negative customer reviews there are some additional warning signs regarding this product.

For example, the marketing for ProDentim uses a lot of techniques often found in scam products.

These methods are intended to place viewers in an emotional state that leads to buying a product without any research or second thought.

Examples of manipulative marketing include:

  • Focusing on the embarrassing and socially isolating effects of tooth issues
  • A fear-based presentation that repeatedly shows graphic images of rotting teeth
  • Promising a miracle cure that only the seller knows about, often tied to an “ancient discovery”

This is in addition to the fact that this product is promoted by a variety of potentially unreputable affiliate websites.

These red flags do not necessarily mean that the product doesn’t work, but it’s definitely something to consider.

The good news is that since they are sold through a 3rd party payment processor (ClickBank), receiving a refund should be fairly straightforward if you contact them directly.

Does ProDentim Really Work?

There is a lot of promising research supporting many of the concepts presented by ProDentim.  Oral probiotics has many potential health benefits.

Examples Include:

  • Produce compounds to fight off harmful bacteria
  • Prevent bacteria from sticking to the teeth
  • Rebalance the mouth’s PH levels
  • Aid the saliva in re-mineralizing tooth enamel

It’s also important to note that a good portion of studies testing dental probiotics did so in conjunction with other treatments.

So oral probiotics may be an effective way to supplement traditional dental health, not replace it.

Experts still recommend:

  • Brushing and Flossing
  • Improving Diet
  • Rinsing with water after meals

The Bottom Line

Ultimately, maintaining a healthy oral biome seems critical to preventing a variety of gum and tooth diseases.

However, based on the research there is not enough evidence to outright recommend ProDentim.  There are also potential red flags due to their manipulative marketing practices, as well as some negative reviews to consider.
