The Zleep Sleep Patch is an overnight skin patch that the seller states can improve sleep using a mix of sleep enhancing ingredients in a time-release formula.

Since the patch promises uninterrupted sleep during the night, this product claims it will also boost focus and memory, improve mood, enhance performance, and support the highest state of overall health.

Ingredients

The main ingredients in the Zleep patch are melatonin, ashwagandha, L-theanine, chamomile, and valerian root.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone that is produced by your body to maintain a healthy wake-sleep cycle.  It is most commonly used to treat jet lag, Non 24-hour Sleep Wake Disorder, shift-work sleep disorders, and general insomnia.

Melatonin has been noted to help with these disorders in laboratory testing; although, some of the sleeping issues seem to return within a year of stopping melatonin treatment.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha comes from an evergreen shrub that grows in Asia and Africa.  Although ashwagandha contains chemicals that show promise in helping to calm the brain, reduce swelling, lower blood pressure, and alter the immune system, more in-depth clinical studies need to be done to verify these results.

Ashwagandha is also sometimes referred to as an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body deal with stress, but this has not been verified in laboratory studies.

L-Theanine

L-theanine is an amino acid that is commonly found in tea.  It shows promise in improving cognitive function, which includes thinking and memory skills.  It may also help to lower stress and promote relaxation, but there isn’t sufficient laboratory data to back up this claim.

There is also insufficient data to support l-theanine’s use in treating insomnia.

Chamomile Extract

Chamomile comes from the flower of the chamomile plant and is commonly used as a tea.

It shows promise as a treatment for anxiety, upset stomach, diarrhea, and mouth ulcers stemming from chemotherapy or radiation treatment.  More data is needed, though, to verify these results.

So far, there is no laboratory evidence suggesting chamomile to be effective as a treatment for insomnia.

Valerian Root

Valerian is a flowering plant, the roots of which have shown to be effective in reducing anxiety and treating insomnia and have been used in alternative medicine for years.

Evidence suggests that valerian root has a sedative effect on the brain and nervous system.

Possible Side Effects

You should avoid taking melatonin if you have medical conditions such as diabetes, depression, blood clotting disorders, blood pressure issues, and epilepsy.

Those who suffer from autoimmune disorders, use sedatives or tranquilizers, or take medicine to prevent organ transplant rejection should avoid taking valerian root.  Women who are pregnant, nursing, or attempting to conceive should also avoid valerian root.

Do not use ashwagandha if you are pregnant or nursing or suffer from an autoimmune disease.  Ashwagandha should also be avoided if you take the following medications: immunosuppressants, sedatives, or thyroid medications.

Ashwagandha can cause sleepiness and drowsiness.  If you take any medications or supplements that can also cause sleepiness and drowsiness, the effect may be multiplied, causing extreme sleepiness and drowsiness.

Do not take chamomile if you have, or have had, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, or have a history of uterine fibroids or endometriosis.  Do not use chamomile if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you have allergies to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds or daisies.

Those who are being treated for the following conditions should also avoid chamomile:

  • blood clotting disorders
  • diabetes
  • erectile dysfunction
  • gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • high blood pressure
  • psoriasis or other autoimmune disorders
  • high cholesterol
  • migraine
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • heartburn
  • psychiatric disorder
  • take blood thinning medications

Valerian Root should also be avoided if you have a history of liver problems.

Common side effects include headache, upset stomach, trouble thinking, strange dreams, daytime drowsiness, dry mouth, and feelings of uneasiness.

Do not use valerian root with alcohol, sedatives, sleeping pills, or anxiety medication as this may result in excessive sleepiness.

How To Use Zleep?
