Viber.com is the online home of Viber, a mobile application that allows its users to communicate through talk, text, and photo messaging with other Viber users all over the world complete for free.
Founded in February of 2010, Viber.com attempts to provide to mobile cell phone users the same type of internet based phone communication offered by VoIP providers like Vonage, or RingCentral.
VoIP is shorthand for voice over internet protocol, a specialized voice communication system which utilizes high speed internet connections to route voice communications rather than traditional phone line.
Usually VoIP phone providers are able to give their customers the ability to communicate for extremely low rates compared to the traditional phone service companies, even when dealing with long distance and international calling.
Viber is following this model, except their goal is to offer this same low cost communication to cell phone and mobile tablet users. This application says that their users can make high definition quality calls to other Viber users on iPhone, Android, Windows phones, Blackberry, Windows OS, Mac, and more using 3G, 4G, and WiFi Connections.
Currently their free calls, texts, photo and video messages are only available when communicating with other Viber users, though they say they currently service more than 200 million users in over 193 countries worldwide.
Customers who would like to communication with friends and family outside the network should know that this application also has something called ViberOut which allows you to use this app to contact non-Viber users for what they describe as “a low rate.”
Unfortunately, though Viber promises free communication, users should know that because this system uses 3G, 4G and WiFi networks as the basis for their communication channels, your mobile service provider may charge you data fees for using this service.
This could result in user dissatisfaction and complaints because data fees can often be much higher than traditional talk or text fees, especially for users who do not have unlimited data plans.
