Verlocal, found online at Verlocal.com, is a website and company that encourages people to “experience the most amazing local adventures in your city” through their personally hosted events.
How Does It Work?
According to their website, the goal of Verlocal is help both locals and travelers find a new and fun way to experience major cities across the United States. Unlike other similar websites that target people who are traveling to a city for the first time, Verlocal extends themselves to people who actually live in the cities where they operate, challenging them to have a broader, more developed understanding of their local area.
Currently this company is operating in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Denver, San Diego, Seattle, and Dallas, though they do encourage people to submit new cities to their site where they would like Verlocal to be launched, so they better know where to expand in the future.
Once you have selected the city where you live or are traveling to, you will be given access to events that are being hosted in that city. Events will vary from cooking classes for local and regional favorites to unique tours of the city to dance and exercise classes to art events, and much more – anything your host can think of, really.
The prices of the events you find on Verlocal are set by the local host who has planned the event. It is up to the local host to choose what costs of the event are included in the overall price and which will be the responsibility of the people who attend, but the website says that all of this information should be made clear in the event description.
Whenever a transaction is made on their website, Verlocal will take a 15% fee from the amount listed. Any tips that you choose to give will be delivered to your local host in full.
It appears that the only refunds provided by Verlocal are given when either the event is cancelled by the host, in which case all attendees will get full refunds, or when you cancel your attendance of an event.
In order to receive a full refund of all fees paid, members must cancel their event reservation more than 48 hours in advance. If you cancel your reservation between 48 hours and 24 hours, you will be given a 50% refund of the fees you paid, and if you cancel less than 24 hours before an event, you will be unable to receive any refund.
However, it is important to point out that if you reserve an event with a MasterHost, you will be required to cancel your reservation more than 5 business days in advance for a full refund and more than 3 business days in advance for a half refund.

This company appears to have positive reviews from travel blogs and publications, who all appear to very enthusiastic about the peer-to-peer movement for travelers hoping to have real local experiences.
There are some mixed reviews of this company from their hosts, almost of which stem from the time period when Verlocal apparently changed their fee from 10% to 15%, which frustrated hosts who had been working with the website before the change. But as for people who use this website to actually attend and experience local events, it appears that customers are generally very happy with their experiences.
