SmartThings is new type of home automation device that claims to give their users "security, peace of mind, and limitless possibilities" for securing and automating their home devices.
How Does It Work?
According to their website, when you purchase SmartThings you will get a hub device that you can place in your home which easily connects to your home's internet router using an included Ethernet cable. The hub has the ability to support ZigBee, Z-Wave, and IP accessible devices, as well as products from Honeywell, GE, Kwikset, Trane, Hue, Sonos, and more.
You will then download an app to your smartphone which gives you the ability to receive notifications about what is going on in your home, as well as use it to remotely control your home's security, energy usage, lighting, and more.
SmartThings offers a variety of different home automation kits, priced from $199 to $299 depending on the items that are included, as well as individual items like motion detectors and light automation devices at different price points. The Hub itself can be purchased individually for $99.
Though the SmartThings home automation system requires access to a mobile device, their website does not actually publish which operating systems they are currently compatible with.
SmartThings.com says that their device comes with a 30 day risk free money back guarantee which states that if you are unhappy for any reason within the first 30 days of purchase, you can return the device for a full refund.
But first you must contact their Customer Service team so they can approve your return request and issue you a Return Authorization Number and packing label. All items must have an RA number and be in the original packaging to be accepted for return.
Customer Service Contact Info
Currently the only option for customers who would like to contact their Customer Service team with questions, concerns, or complaints is to do so by email, at [email protected]
SmartThings tends to receive positive reviews, not only for what their devices can offer homeowners but also for the level of customization they provide their customers, with the ability to pick and choose their own devices to suit their needs.
Competitors and Alternatives?
It is pretty early in the home automation market - currently SmartThings and Revolv are some of the only devices of their kind available, though now the door has been opened there will likely be many more competitors.
