About is the online home of Patreon, a company that says their goal is to “help every creator in the world achieve sustainable income” by gathering and growing the fans who matter most.

How Does It Work?

According to their website, has a mission to “fund the emerging creative class” by giving them a place where Creators can run their creative businesses, earn money, and connect with the customers that will help them the most over time.

Creators will be able to build their own page where they will post their work throughout the month, including webcomics, videos, songs, and anything else you create. Customers can get access to these works if they become Patrons.

Patrons are described as those customers who will be your most passionate fans, excited to pay you to make amazing things for a monthly fee that is less than what they will pay for services like Netflix or Spotify.

Mobile Options

Currently this website does offer their customers a mobile application for both iOS and Android devices.

Cost/Price Plans

Their website is very clear that all Patreon members will retain 100% ownership of their content, with zero contracts. Patreon will take 5% of all processed payments in order to maintain their website and its features.

Creators can choose to set up their websites in two ways, either Monthly Campaigns or Per-Creation Campaigns. On a Monthly Campaign, Patrons will be charged automatically once per month. These pledges will continue each month until that Patron decides to delete their account. Patreon says that the majority of their Creators run their pages on a per month cycle.

The Per-Creation Campaigns lets creators manually select whether or not they would like to charge Patrons for a post. At the month’s start, Patrons will be charged for all the paid posts for the previous month. To give Patrons more control over how much they are charge, Patreon does give them an option to place a monthly max on their pledges.

Refund Policy

This website says that they understand that Patrons may want a refund, and the Patreon website is willing to provide their customers with a refund “in exceptional circumstances.” These circumstances are not detailed on their website.

If you are a Creator and the website does determine that circumstances have occurred which justify a refund, the cost of this refund will be deducted from future payments made to you until it has been paid back in total.

Customer Service Contact Info

Customers who would like to contact Customer Service with any questions, concerns, or complaints can do so by submitting them directly to their website through their Support link.

The Patreon website says that they have artists on their platform that earn $25,000 per month, and this may be the case, but the vast majority of users say that it can be incredibly difficult to get Patrons to sign up for a monthly regular contribution. The fact that the website also lets Patrons cap their monthly contributions makes this even more difficult.

The point is not that this platform isn’t worth your time, but rather that Creators who sign up for this site are aware that this opportunity will still require a lot of work and effort in order to bring in regular income.

Competitors and Alternatives?

There are many different websites which are dedicated to helping people who work in the arts and creating fields connect with potential customers. Many of these websites are separated depending on the creative field in which you work, so that is often the most successful way to find the best alternative for your needs.
