About Pathway Genomics
Pathway Genomics, found online at Pathway.com, is a medical lab that wants to offer people the opportunity to receive the best quality, targeted medical treatment by providing different analyses of their DNA, depending on your needs.
How Does It Work?
According to their website, Pathway Genomics believes that “the future of medicine allows patients to receive affordable, personalized, and precise care.” The truth is that even now genetic testing has become so far advanced that there is a huge selection of genetic testing that you can do to improve your everyday health and wellness, as well as any future medical treatments you may need.
Currently they offer their PathwayFit test, which analyzes over 75 genetic markers known to be associated with diet, exercise, and a number of health conditions. Customers who take this test will be given a report on how your body processes sugars, fats, vitamins, and nutrients, along with personalized recommendations for what exercises and diets will provide you with optimal health.
They also offer their SkinFit test, which analyzes over 70 genetic markers associated with seven categories of skin health, including an individuals’ genetic predisposition to sun-induced skin aging and sensitivity, dry skin and wrinkle development, skin inflammation and allergy, skin texture and elasticity, skin’s protection against oxidation and glycation, and the skin’s nutritional needs.
These are not the only tests they offer, however. They also provide Mental Health DNA Insight®, Pain Medication DNA Insight®, and Cardiac DNA Insight®, as well as various genetic cancer screenings, and more.
Because this company offers so many different types of tests, and there are so many different ways to pay for these exams, it is difficult to say what a Pathway Genomics test would actually cost you. At this time, they do accept Consumer Insurance and Medicare, Financial Assistance Program, Direct Institutional Provider Billing, and Direct Patient Billing as methods of payment.
Customers will need to direct all questions of payment to their insurance or medical program to see if these exams are covered, and if they are not, then the PathwayFit and SkinFit tests are priced at $599 and their remaining tests will vary in price.
This company does not provide their customers with any information regarding refunds, which is not at all uncommon for a company that provides medical lab testing generally paid for by insurance or other medical payment programs. Customers or physicians that would want to cancel any tests would need to contact their Customer Service team to make sure that cancellations take place before tests are run, but it is unclear whether or not cancellation will result in a full refund unless it is cancelled before you the test kit is even sent.

First it is important to note that unlike other volunteer genetic testing, Pathway Genomics does require that your test be ordered by a physician – you are not able to order it directly yourself.
But it is important to point out that these types of genetic tests are extremely controversial, as most experts say that reading DNA tests is still more of an art than a science. As a New York Times article pointed out in a comparison done three years ago, if someone takes, three different genetic tests provided three different sets of results, and sometimes the results were in direct opposition to each other, with one test saying someone was at high risk for particular disease and other tests saying the same person was at low risk for this same illness.
This is extremely problematic for customers, especially people who believe that genetic testing is a hard science with an indisputable result, which is just not the case at this point in time.
Customers should consider what exactly they want genetic testing for, as your doctor and your insurance company have a variety of genetic tests they can order on your behalf and which will be paid for, at least in part, by your insurance company and then your results can be decoded by your doctor in combination with your full personal medical history, which is obviously the best plan for most people.
