About Nothing New Shoes

The planet is rapidly becoming a scarier place to live. As the oceans become filled with plastic, the air is filled with pollutants, and the landfills become increasingly more crowded, you may be wondering what you, as a consumer, can do to help.

The fashion industry is one of the greatest contributors to the global environmental crisis. If you like looking good but want to know how you can help the planet, it’s time to give one of the many sustainable footwear companies out there a try.

With Nothing New, you don’t need to sacrifice style for sustainability. Here’s what you need to know about one of the newest environmentally friendly footwear brands.

How Does it Work?

The Nothing New brand is aptly named, launched with the goal of making luxury designer shoes that are also eco-friendly. Based out of New York City, the company has no brick-and-mortar stores but instead sells environmentally friendly and recycled shoes entirely online.

This company doesn’t just make products that look good, but that do good, too. It took the founders 15 months and countless prototypes to figure out how to make sustainable and attractive shoes, but today, they offer a super thoughtful product that is also super stylish.

The Nothing New sneakers are made out of recycled cotton and post-consumer recycled plastic. They also use post-industrial recycled fishing nets for the heel counters in the shoes, helping to reduce improper disposal in the oceans. All shoes are designed with true stitch construction that is comfortable, flexible and requires no chemical-heavy glue or sulfur emissions. The shoes are optimized to be antimicrobial, ordo-resistant, and designed for both high-impact performance and all-day comfort.

Even the outsoles are recycled, made out of recycled rubber, recycled cork, and other materials that are certified conflict-free. The shoes were created with the goal of saving the amount of plastic and other contaminants that end up in the oceans and the landfills, but they don’t compromise on style or comfort. The materials maximize flexible, traction, and longevity.

There are plenty of products to choose from.  Nothing New shoes offers several designs of canvas shoes as well s socks and shoe cleaners. When it comes to both men and women’s shoes, there are high tops and low tops available. The high tops look like standard canvas shoes - like Converse - but of course, are sustainably designed and ethically manufactured.

Both the high and low tops come in a variety of colors, including grey, white, black, field tan, off white, and forest. Most are available in standard sizes consistent with what you would normally wear in athletic sneakers. They run a bit small. For women, sizes of most models are available in 5-11. For men’s sneakers, you should be able to find sizes 7 to 13.

Cost and Price Plans

The average cost of Nothing New sneakers will depend on the specific pair you decide to order. Most women’s high top sneakers start at $110 with free shipping and free returns. Low tops are $95. The prices of the men’s high and low top sneakers match those of the women.

If you’re interested in shopping some of Nothing New’s other offerings, you’ll have plenty to choose from. Although they don’t offer other clothing options besides footwear (no recycled hoodie sweatshirts yet, unfortunately!) you can buy eco-friendly socks to pair with your Nothing New sneakers.

These are about $10 a pair, or you can get a free pair when you buy a five-pack for $40. There are both ankle and crew styles available. You can also purchase a foam cleanser for your sneakers at $16 or extra shoelaces for $10.

Competitors and Alternatives

Nothing New is truly “nothing new” when it comes to sustainable footwear - there are plenty of alternatives on the market. The concept of recycled sneakers isn’t revolutionary,  but Nothing New takes the cake when it comes to style. There are other companies, like Allbirds, that offer sustainable shoes. However, it will be more difficult to find a standard white sneaker that has the classic look and feel you know and love.

When compared vs. Converse, Nothing New has the same traditional, old-school basketball silhouette. They look just like the Chuck Taylor All Stars - except many reviewers claim that the sizing for Nothing New sneakers is actually more accurate. They aren’t as suitable for athletic purposes as Converse sneakers, but they feel just as good on your feet. The prices are comparable, too.

Online Customer Reviews/Complaints

If you’re an environmentally-minded consumer, you’re going to like what people have to say about Nothing New in their low- and high top reviews. Each pair is made from more than five recycled plastic bottles and saves 160 gallons of water compared to traditional canvas sneakers. Sizing is accurate and while they’re not designed for serious athletic performance, they’re perfect for everyday comfort.

The company has a generous return policy. You can submit a return or an exchange within 14 days of receiving your order. The items must be unworn and undamaged, and it can take up to two weeks for a refund to be initiated. Free shipping is also available if you spend more than $50, a nice feature that you won’t find with many online clothing companies.

Customer Service

Need to get in touch with someone at Nothing New? Not a problem. You can reach out via Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, or YouTube if social media is your style. Alternatively, you can use the handy email form on the website. At this time, there is no contact phone number listed on the website, although there is a convenient instant messaging feature.

Where to Buy?

Nothing New sneakers are only available directly from the manufacturers’ website.

Is Nothing New Worth It?

With the goal of making the world a cleaner place, Nothing New certainly has a noble mission when it comes to manufacturing ethical footwear. Experts estimate that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish - unless something is done.

If you want to purchase shoes that intersect beauty, function, and sustainability, give Nothing New a try. You’ll benefit from shoes that are better for your feet, but also better for the planet.
