Halo Top makes healthy ice cream that is low in calories, high in protein, low in sugar, and uses all natural ingredients that taste like regular ice cream.  The company was one of the first to go mainstream with a healthy ice cream and is now credited with creating an entire market for healthy/alternative ice creams.

From humble beginnings of only 4 flavors, the company now has a product line that includes over 25 flavors and a variety of options.  Halo Top creamery has earned many accolades along the way and our now expanding outside the U.S.

Products and Ingredients

Halo Top was the result of trial and error by Justin Woolverton, an attorney who suffered from hypoglycemic episodes. When he tried to eat so-called healthy frozen treats, he found that they were filled with sugar.

Traditional ice cream contains sugar that provides flavor and lowers the melting point so that the frozen product doesn’t get too hard. The fat also helps make the scoopable consistency.

Woolverton bought an ice cream maker in 2011 and played around with recipes. He eventually chose a no-calorie sugar alcohol called erythritol, the all natural zero calorie sweetener Stevia for sweetness, milk protein to make up for the loss of fat, plant fiber to help with meltability, and extra egg white for consistency.

By 2014 Halo Top was in Kroger, Whole Foods and other stores. Their ice cream came in 17 flavors including vanilla bean, peanut butter cup, and lemon cake. Each pint of ice cream is 240 calories, 6 g of protein, 2 g of fat, 5 g of fiber, and 14 g of carbs. By comparison, traditional ice cream brands are high in sugar and have 1,000 calories.

Thirteen of the flavors are both Kosher Dairy certified and Certified Gluten-Free. The chocolate chip cookie dough, cookies & cream, s’mores, and red velvet flavors are only Kosher Dairy certified.

To give an example of one of Halo Top’s ice cream’s ingredients, the popular vanilla bean flavor is made up of milk, eggs, erythritol, prebiotic fiber, milk protein concentrate, organic cane sugar, vegetable glycerin, organic vanilla extract, organic vanilla beans, sea salt, organic carob gum, organic guar gum, and organic stevia.

Halo Top’s most recent creations are a line of Keto Ice Creams, available in pints and pops.  This series is in line with the keto diet by even further limiting the amount of net carbs per serving.  If you’re counting your macros this lets you stay in Ketosis while indulging in the occasional dessert.

Cost

Halo Top’s ice cream price varies across stores.  The average being around $4.99 per pint.

Online Reviews/Complaints

Halo Top has received a variety of positive press coverage including BuzzFeed, Bloomberg Business, and Today. Many people were often skeptical at first about how good a healthy ice cream would taste or if it was even healthy at all. But many of them were instantly hooked on the flavor and love its ability to satisfy their sweet tooth. Some people even did experiments where they ate nothing but Halo Top ice cream for a few days and ended up losing weight.

While most customers love the taste of Halo Top, they also think the texture is still not as creamy as the traditional brands. Some people also didn’t like the texture of some flavors like vanilla maple and chocolate mocha chip.

Competitors and Alternatives

There are other companies that offer dairy free and organic healthy ice cream alternatives or flavors including Whole Foods 365 Organic Ice Cream, La Loo’s Goat’s Milk Ice Cream, and Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss.

However, Halo Top currently has a near monopoly on the healthy ice cream market and has more flavor options than the other healthy ice cream brands, many of which just have one or a few flavors.

Where to Buy?

You can buy Halo Top in stores around the US and the products can be found using the company’s store locator halotop.com/where-to-buy/.

Is Halo Top Good For Weight Loss - Is The Ice Cream Healthy?

If you’re trying to overhaul your diet and have come across any of the popular diets like Paleo/Keto/Whole30, you’ll notice they all have one thing in common.  They mainly advocate for avoiding all highly processed foods and eating clean.

One of the issues with Halo Top is that while they are low calorie and low in sugar they do not have the cleanest ingredient lists, often including things like Erythritol, Palm oil, Cornstarch, and others.  So advocates of clean eating may not recommend Halo Top.

However, in terms of weight loss, these ice creams can be a helpful tool if one of your issues is combating unhealthy cravings.  As a substitute for traditional sugar-laden ice creams, Halo Top is definitely the better alternative.

If you incorporate it as an indulgence, with a healthy meal plan and work out routine it shouldn’t interfere with any weight loss goals.

Tastes like medicine

My son bought this and I had no prior bias one way or another. One mouthful was enough. Ech.

Some flavors are better than others
September 11, 2018

I've been extremely impressed with the taste and texture of chocolate, peanut butter cup, and cinnamon roll. I love being able to eat ice cream on a hot day without destroying my calorie count.

With that said, some of the flavors were a definite miss for me.

I second the reviewer on here who said the s'mores flavor tastes like coconut and not like any smores ingredients. It's a very specific flavor and not at all what you would want or expect when you buy smores ice cream. That was highly disappointing and frankly kind of bizarre. I check the ingredients and there's not even any coconut in there. I was worried maybe I'd picked up the dairy free version by mistake, but the packaging says it's regular. It tastes so wrong for what it's supposed to be that I would genuinely suspect a mix-up in the factory were it not for this random other person who's complained of the same thing.

This makes me worry that some of the other, fancier flavors might be a lot worse than the more basic flavors like chocolate or peanut butter so my advice would be to stick to the single-note flavors if in doubt.

Gross!

I didn't expect much coming into this experience, and my expectations were met. If you can't eat regular ice cream, then go for it. But it is NOT a comparable substitute. You can definitely tell that it's not real ice cream. I love ice cream, and this is not ice cream.

Tastes like salt and bacon in frozen old milk.

This stuff is disgusting. The caramel macchiato tastes like bacon and salt. The S'mores tastes like coconut, no chocolate, no graham cracker tastes. Its like old, frozen, ice milk. Tastes like chemicals.

Love it; but not always full and some freezer burnt

Love the taste. Love the lower calories. Great for losing weight. I don't appreciate that some are two inches lower and freezer burnt

Happy ice queen!!

I was just recently added to a group on Facebook for people who have had or are going to have weight loss surgery. I had the gastric bypass surgery In August 2015. Since then I have missed sugar!! I love ice cream and have tried to eat it a few times since my surgery and just can't without feeling like crap. I saw a picture of this ice cream in the group I joined, so I looked up the nutritional information. I honestly thought there was no way this could be right. I Google searched where I could buy this. Luckily there's a store right down the street that carries this in several flavors. Even without tasting it, I trusted my gut and bought 3 flavors, peanut butter, oatmeal cookie and black cherry. As soon as I got home I opened the peanut butter one. Holy smokes, this was delicious!!! It has a rich creamy flavor that melts perfectly in your mouth. With this being so low in sugar, I had no problem at all after eating. I can't believe this is really a thing. Thank you Halo!! I'll be back to let you know how the other flavors are. I plan on trying them all.
