How Does It Work?
Car renters can use their website or mobile applications to find a car in their community that is available and within their budget to rent. The first time you rent, your driver's license and credit card will instantly be scanned, and drivers with poor driving history will be excluded.
Car owners who wish to list their car can do so simply by signing up, giving their car a descriptive name, and providing pictures and details about their vehicles. The website does not actually provide any guidelines as to what kinds of cars can be rented through this website, leaving it up the owner to make their own choice about renting their vehicle.
Whenever your car is reserved by a renter, you will provide a location for the car to be picked up and dropped off, as well as any additional instructions. When you sign up your car as a rental option, you will be required to install a Wi-Fi and GPS enabled device in the car that will allow your car to be opened via your mobile application.
Any time your car is in the possession of a renter it will be insured up to $1 million and covered by 24/7 roadside assistance. This insurance will cover all damage or thefts from your car, with no out of pocket expenses to the car owner.
Currently this company provides mobile applications for iOS and Android mobile devices. At this time there is no information about any plans to extend the mobile offerings.
There are no monthly or annual fees to either list your car or to be a rental member. Car owners who list their cars also set the prices for their car rentals, but when doing so they need to keep in mind that 40% of the rental charges are paid to GetAround.com.
Since this service is free for car owners to participate in, they do not offer a Refund Policy to them. Customers who are renting cars will want to know both their cancellation policies up front, but since they do not charge any membership fees to their customers, they do not offer any standard Refund Policy for them either. Instead, if you encounter a situation that you feel justifies a refund of all or some of your charges, you should contact GetAround.com immediately and each situation will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

This service is only available in a few metropolitan areas at this time, but reviews from users in this cities are generally good. That being said, there have been some complaints or concerns voiced online as well.
First, because GetAround.com takes a 40% commission on the rental of any car which is processed through their system, many car owners take this as a cue to set their rental prices fairly high, so they can still make what they feel is a good profit on renting their car.
A much bigger issue, however, was raised by Forbes Magazine in an article that pointed out that a thief could rent a car from GetAround.com to figure out where the owner was storing the car key, and then return later to steal the car.
CNET.com followed up on this claim and was told that while GetAround.com members could enable an immobilization feature on their car to stop potential thieves, but most members do not because then they would have to contact the company any time they wanted to use their own car. This is something that users should take into consideration when deciding whether or not to be a part of this service.
Competitors and Alternatives?
While there are many localized rental car companies out there, like ZipCar, services that allow regular car owners to rent their car out are fewer and far between.
