About FreedomPop.com

FreedomPop.com offers consumers free internet and phone services. They have set monthly data plans and plenty of add-on services to meet the everyday needs of their users. Best of all, with FreedomPop’s services, there are no contracts to sign or fees for cancelling.

On the FreedomPop website, submit your zip code and email to find out if you live in an area serviced by them. Since FreedomPop operates through Clearwire and Sprint, it is likely you will be able to take advantage of what they have to offer.

FreedomPop.com requires the purchase one of their devices for connectivity to their data plans. Many of them are geared toward those who seek to increase the capabilities and usage of their mobile phones, laptops and tablets while on the go.

FreedomPop’s plans are based around a data bundling system. Any unused data for that month is bundled and then is sold for a lower price. This enables them to offer great deals to their customers.

Social media has played a significant role in their business model. FreedomPop users can connect with their friends and view how much data they have remaining for that month. If one person is almost out of data, they can request to GET their friends data and can be achieved if they choose to GIVE you their remaining data.

What seems to be advertised as a free service is not free at all. In fact it is $20.00 per month plus the cost of add-on services you select for your plan. Some additional service fees include unlimited calling, additional data, and faster connection speeds. These small dollar amounts add up quickly and can surprisingly end up costing more than you had anticipated initially.

Hidden costs have been a topic of complaint as seen in online reviews. If you use less than 5mg of data per month an active status fee of $0.99 will be charged to your account. Even though they claim it is no longer being charged for, individuals still see this fee on their billing statement.

Without going through the signup process, it is hard to figure out what pricing you will be afforded until the final list of charges appear immediately prior to checkout. The free data allotted per month is not very much. Prior to selecting your add-on services, you may want to calculate your average data usage so you don’t run out each month.

Be mindful of Freedom Pop policies. Setting up an account is easy to do and changes can be made just by logging on. If you want to avoid auto renewal charges, change the settings in your account. However, should you reach your plan limit and the auto renewal setting has been deactivated, your device will simply stop working.

All fees are listed in their terms you must read them carefully as you always should for any service or product. Even though they charge for any add-ons, their prices are still competitive. It seems as if their business model, revolving around data usage, has allowed them to beat out their competitors prices.

Nightmare with FreedomPop

October26, 2014

I waited for more than 40 minutes to reach customer services to downgrade my plan to 500mb free plan. I got $12.49 refund of Premium service in August but my account was cancelled when I want to use 500MB free account to check a single email. In October, I received a pending charge $24.99 again for no reason. I have to queue in line for an hour to reach customer service again to see why I got such charge.

Stay away FreedomPOP, it is not really free.

More traps than a hunter's lodge

It's hard to argue with free service, but Freedompop goes out of their way to prove that logic incorrect. If you get a device, pray you have no problems with it because their support is horrible. You have to spend 30 minutes waiting to talk to someone and then get someone with a thick Indian accent who seems more interested in arguing with you than helping.

On it's face, the billing is already deceptive and predatory. What's worse, is that they have billing policies that are COMPLETELY UNDOCUMENTED. I don't even know if this is legal at all, but since you have to sign an arbitration agreement, you can't take them to court over it.

If you have a problem with billing, good luck getting a refund. I had to provide my own documented proof of their error to get them to offer me HALF of my money back and then had to threaten to dispute the charges with my credit card company to get the rest.

Do NOT do business with this company, even if you think the free plan is right for you. Eventually SOMETHING will go wrong and you will thoroughly regret ever doing business with them.

Time will tell

February7, 2014

I recently signed on with freedompop and received my reconditioned HTC evo 4G phone. Everything looked well but then discovered there are no numbers available for my state so I had to get a phone number from another state - this is an inconvenience but workable. Then I tried setting up my "new" phone to discover apparently I must have a gmail account - this would have been nice to know before I paid for the phone, but still workable. As I am attempting to sign up for a new gmail account, a window pops up asking me to "add a gmail account" and every time it does it erases my password. So it's telling me to open a gmail account but keeps stopping me from doing just that. If I had a hammer this would no longer be workable. I used my PC to create a gmail account despite the fact that I really don't want one just so I can use my new phone. I will write updates as this progresses so keep posted.

update - now that I have created a gmail account on my PC and then logged into that account on my "new" phone, I am finally able to receive SMS messages. Some of the glitches I am having setting this thing up might be attributable to the fact that this is really a 3-4 year old phone running android 2.3 so despite the fact that it looks brand new it's old in phone technology years. Had I known all this prior, I might have just kept my 4 year old blackberry.

It has been almost a year since I started with Freedom Pop. Would I do it again - maybe. my answer really depends on what time of the day you ask me. Right now I am sitting at home and linked to my wifi so reception is good and the phone is working like any other phone. if however you ask me when I am out and about and this phone is dropping calls, constantly restarting, freezing in the middle of a message, losing messages, and basically being pretty unreliable as a communications device then my answer would be a resounding, "NO". In the end, I am not convinced the year or continual irritation is really worth the money I saved by going with FreedomPop. It does make me wonder, since Freedom Pop can afford to provide service for voice, text, and data at these rates just how ridiculous the screwing we are getting from all the major carriers for the same service. .
