About Family Tree DNA

Family Tree DNA, found online at, is a website which says that they have the largest ancestry DNA database in the world, giving people their best chance to “trace their lineage through time.”

How Does It Work?

According to their website, Family Tree DNA has the largest ancestry database in the world, with the ability to offer their customers all three currently available different types of ancestry DNA tests, including the Family Finder Autosomal test, two different forms of maternal DNA tests, and three different forms of paternal DNA tests.

Test results will take anywhere between 3 and 12 weeks, depending on the type of test you order, with the Family Finder test taking the shortest time period and the more detailed paternal DNA tests taking the longest time period.

You can track your testing through your FTDNA account, and when your results are ready they will be posted to your account – no results will be mailed to you. However, you will be allowed to print as many results certificates from your account as you want, for free.

Cost/Price Plans

The Family Finder is their most basic test and is priced at $99. The tests that are specific to father DNA range between $169 and $359 depending on how many markers you want included, while the tests that are specific to mother DNA range between $69 and $199 depending on how detailed you would like the sequencing to be. All these details are explained on their website, so you can make sure you are really paying for the results that you want.

Refund Policy

Because of the nature of this product, Family Tree DNA actually has a very complicated and detailed Refund Policy. A basic overview of this policy is that test orders can be both changed and cancelled as long as your kit has not actually made it to the lab to be tested.

If you return an unused kit still sealed in its original mailing envelope, you will receive a refund of the test price minus the credit card processing charges, which is 3% of the test price, and the Handing charge of $10.00. If you cancel your order without returning the kit at all, your price will be refunded minus a 15% fee for credit card charges, materials, and Handling costs.

If your kit does make it to the lab, the process of changing or cancelling your test becomes much more complicated. Their website provides a detailed explanation of what process to follow, depending on the original test you ordered, as well as at what point in the processing your kit has reached.

Customer Service Contact Info

Customers who would like to contact Customer Service with any questions, concerns, or complaints can do so by phone at 713-868-1438, by email at [email protected], or by submitting them directly to their website through their Contact Us link.

Genealogy websites are an area of the internet that people take very seriously, and there are many, many third party sources out there reviewing and commenting on the quality of any website which claims to provide resources for ancestry and family tree sources.

As a DNA testing website, there are many positive reviews of this company because of the expansions and partnerships they have made over the last few years, they are clearly a company that provides more options than many other competitors, which gives customers a better chance of getting all the information they are hoping to get from this kind of ancestry tracing.

Unfortunately, these same expansions and partnerships have created a few problems, the most significant of which is a huge backlog of kits taking much, much longer to process than customers are originally told. In fact, some customers have reported being given a test results date which has been significantly delayed three or four times.

Another issue with this company is that sometimes samples must be re-tested due to a lab error of some kind, but the Family Tree DNA website is very clear about the potential of this happening, and that generally the same sample can be retested without requiring the customer to do anything.

If a second sample is requested, they will automatically send another kit to your house, at no charge to you.

Competitors and Alternatives?

As mentioned above, there are many other websites that work within the ancestry and genealogy fields, including the area of ancestry DNA testing, with websites like, Ancestry DNA, and more.

If you have experience with this company or their products, please leave your Family Tree DNA reviews below.

Family Tree DNA is a scam

April19, 2019

Family Tree DNA is a scam. Their genealogists create fake labels for DNA samples, without any supporting documentation whatsoever. Instead of using DNA to trace one's heritage, they rely on the false labels. Their fake labels actually make it impossible to trace one's true ancestry. When I exposed their fraud, and threatened a class action lawsuit, they blocked me from viewing their website.

February 11, 2019 purchased Y111 Dna test last night, and then a few hours later changed my mind. They are trying to charge me 30.00 due to their refund policy. I am going to spread the word. I feel ripped off. They certainly wont be getting my business anymore.

Not a scam but not good.

July4, 2016

Have been in their system for 5 years. It's been really disappointing so far but somehow still hopeful of something; anything. Did the 37 marker test. I can't make sense of the results and noone has been able to tell me much. The potential family contacts I've been given never reply. I can't sign in to FTDNA's website at present and no amount of enquiries/ requests sent via their website and facebook have helped. Hopefully a better service exists.
