Ecosia.org is the online home of Ecosia, a company who says that their goal is to take the basic function of web browsing and turn it into a way to “plant trees while you search the web.”
How Does It Work?
Their website says that the way their web browser extension works is very simple. You download their browser extension, use it to search the web, and the ads that are generated while you search will pay for this company to plant trees in different areas around the world.
Ecosia.org says that they choose to plant trees for so many reasons. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, so they help fight climate change, and they protect the soil from erosion while helping keep the land fertile. They also clean the air by absorbing pollutant gases and filtering out particulates, and forests regulate water cycles and help food and ecosystem diversity.
Their website says that the funds generated by Ecosia has helped them to plant an average of one tree every 30 seconds. When you perform your Ecosia search they will display a personalized tree counter for you, which will help you understand how many trees you have already helped to plant.
This counter does not intend to show you how many trees you have personally planted all on your own, but rather how many trees that you have financially contributed toward planting.
As an optional browser extension, this company does not charge their customers any fees to download their product or to use it when they are performing searches. Instead, the charitable fees paid to this company all come from the advertisements that you will be exposed to on this search platform, as opposed to traditional search engines who are described as keeping advertising profits for themselves.
Because this company does not charge their customers any money to download their browser extension nor do they charge any fees to perform searches with their extension, so they do not offer their customers a Refund Policy.

As a free web browser extension, this product doesn’t seem to drive a lot of reviews. However, there are people online complaining that they are unsure of whether or not this company actually fulfills their promises to users.
Ecosia.org does say that they are a certified B Corporation, which is a special certification given to for-profit organizations that also work to “meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.”
Competitors and Alternatives?
There are many different options for people looking to work with for-profit companies that still work to benefit society and the environment, though they may not be in the area of internet searches. Some of the most famous socially conscious companies include Toms, who donates a pair of shoes for every pair purchased, and Warby Parker, who donates glasses to children in need.

It does not matter if Ecosia is planting trees or not. It is a possibility, and it is almost as good as Google, so why not use it just in case? You may be possibly saving our planet, one search at a time.
Ecosia does not let me personalize so that kinda sucks, but hey! Planting trees! It is kinda hard for me to believe that they are really planting trees for EVERY search, but they have to be planting SOME trees or they would be straight up lying. I prefer Google over Ecosia, but I like trees more than that.
SAVE THE PLANET. NOT JUST THE TURTLES.
Ecosia is just a mildly worse version than chrome, and with the flimsy promise of planting trees, you might as well use a different search engine. I don't know if Ecosia is really planting trees like they say it is, which you think would be easy to prove if they really were, so why don't they prove it? I don't know, and so I am moving back to chrome.
for 1 you dont even care about the users. two why do you even try. you know that you doing it for the money and plus you used a guy that sounds like he is american and was born in india. also you dont plant trees
There's almost no reason not to use Ecosia.
Sure, you may not get the best results when it comes to things that aren't searched very often, but every search helps plant a tree! Why *not* use it?
It's fine I guess, It's just another way to help us breathe in the future..
I use it both on my PC and phone, and it works like a charm. A great additional way to help the world.
But not all. The algorithm they use is different than google and doesn’t provide the same quality results. In most cases what I’m searching for is popular enough to find what I need and so ecosia works well. It’s in my computer browser and on my phone. Downside you do have to specifically add the app because you can’t set it as a default engine.
Sometimes the results I get aren’t giving me what I need in which case I almost always can find it on google. I rather give my business to a company providing a service to the benefit of the earth. So I use ecosia as much as I can.
Their site is pretty transparent with their financial info available to any who wish to read. They say it’s approx 45 searches to one tree so the counter is # of searches toward tree plantings but it isn't a direct measure of it. Different searches generate various revenue so it’s not a tidy figure to report.
I’m up to 502 searches or about 11 trees.
It’s an easy way to contribute to the environment with almost no trouble for you. Why not?
