About Doc Club
SundanceNow Doc Club is an organization that says they are dedicated to bringing their members the world’s best documentaries while giving them access to a passionate community with which to connect.
How Does It Work?
The goal of Doc Club is to bring together a community of members who love nonfiction storytelling and want to have access to an updated and far reaching collection of the world’s best documentaries.
The website is very clear that in order to create their selection of films, they do not really on algorithms or computers running formulas. Instead, all of their films are “specially handpicked by cultural icons and filmmakers to ensure that only the best films are featured.” Doc Club wants to provide people with “hard to find gems” that can’t be found anywhere else.
In addition to your access to their extensive library of films, which is changed and updated each month, you will also be given access to movie premiers, award shows, film festivals, and other membership benefits as they become available.
At this time, the website states that they offer two mobile apps for iOS and Android, and that Doc Club is available to stream ad free from your personal computer, Apple iOS 7+, Android 4+, Roku, Chromecast, and Apple TV (via Airplay).
Currently a Doc Club membership is available in the United States and Canada for $6.99 per month while an annual subscription is priced at $59.99 per year. In all other international countries where a Doc Club membership is available, the monthly membership price is $4.99 per month and $39.99 per year.
Customers are able to cancel their membership at any time they choose and their membership will continue until the end of their pre-paid subscription period. Unfortunately their website is very clear that payments are non-refundable and they will not offer any refunds for partially used subscriptions.
The website does say that they do offer their customers refunds, discounts, or credits under certain circumstances, but they do not list what these circumstances are, only to say that these will be given at their sole discretion, as assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Customer Service Contact Info
Customers who would like to speak to their Customer Service team about their questions, concerns, or complaints can do so by submitting them directly to their website through their Support link at the bottom of the page and then clicking the Email Us link on the right hand side of that page.
At this time, it appears as though the SundanceNow Doc Club receives very positive reviews, with many film and art blogs and websites stating their appreciation for being able to have access to such high quality films that are often difficult or even impossible to find on your own.
In addition, the reviews of their mobile apps available on iTunes and Google Play are very positive, so customers who will likely use this service exclusively on mobile devices can feel confident that they are getting their money’s worth.
Competitors and Alternatives?
Certainly there are many, many different streaming services that provide their customers access to movies of all different kinds, like Netflix, MovieLush.com, LoveFilm.com, MGO.com, Vudu.com, Mubi.com, and many others, but it does not appear that there are many services dedicated entirely to nonfiction documentary films the way Doc Club is.

My intention was to pay for one month, as the 7 day trial was too short a period. I was billed for an entire year. My fault for not reading the fine print, but misleading nonetheless.
I tried the one week trial for SN and could not watch anything because of stopping and stopping issues so I tried to cancel. They sent me an email giving me instructions on how to fix the problem and a one month free trial period because of the problems I was having. I have emails from them to prove my issue. Then 2 weeks later I see I have been charged ONE YEAR'S subscription for a movie website that I cannot even watch because the stopping and starting issues prevented me from watching it. I have sent emails explaining WHY I should immediately be refunded for 59.99. I can't afford a yearly subscription to ANYTHING much less a movie site I cannot even watch without screen stopping and starting issues. They usually respond rather quickly but it's been 2 full days now and I haven't heard anything from them at all.(they're support site says they will respond within 48 hours as they have 24 hour monitoring) . I placed a dispute transaction with my bank and I kept all emails from SN to prove my case for a full refund, I will not just let this go, it's wrong..
I joined to view a documentary I wanted to see and kept it thinking I would find others I wanted to see. After a couple of months I realized I wasn't using it and I went on to cancel. Several months later I realized they were still billing. me. I emailed their support and asked for a refund for those months. They say they have no record of me cancelling. I checked my email and have a record of retrieving my password on the day I cancelled, but no email verifying cancellation. They can see that I haven't used the service, but refuse a refund claiming their system is infallible. I guess they're not doing well financially and need every penny they can get.
