About Deserve Credit Card
Deserve is a company founded by two visionaries, Kalpesh Kapadia and Michael Hallinan in 2016. In the beginning, the company was named SelfScore. During that time, they focused on allowing international students, those who lacked access to the traditional banking system, get credit at fair rates.
Through serving them, the company managed to grow, developing the infrastructure and technology to be able to serve all college students in the U.S., as well as the general market. Later on, the name of the company was changed to Deserve and their new products are designed to support young people in search for funds, underserved by the traditional banking system.
Deserve developed three different products to match the need of millennials and Gen Z’s for financial independence, no matter if they have a previous credit score or not.
This credit card was made for those who lack in credit history - or might not even have one - and want to build one. Moreover, it does not even require a security deposit or a co-signer for the approval. The beginning limit is up to $1,500, but you have the opportunity to upgrade to Deserve Edu or Deserve Pro with responsible use.
This includes using the card regularly, making on-time payments and staying below your credit limit.
This card was designed with college students in mind. To apply for this credit card, you don’t need to have a credit history. In addition to that, you may enjoy great benefits, such as Amazon Prime Student with free 2-day shipping, Prime Video and Prime Music.
Furthermore, it includes a credit limit of up to $5,000, as well as 1% cash back on all purchases made.
This Deserve credit card is developed for the users who are not new to credits and have already managed to build a credit history. It features higher credit limits and 1% cash back for all purchases, 2% cash back on restaurants and 3% cash back on travel and entertainment.
How Does It Work?
Through an online form, you will provide your personal and contact information, such as name, address, date of birth, phone number, etc. You will also need to provide your financial status and your full social security number. However, with exception for the international students and if you apply for the Deserve Edu option.
After you have applied, the company calculates your credit potential and will decide whether to approve or deny your credit card request.
Cost and Price Plans
The Deserve Classic annual fee is $39 and the interest rate is 24.24% variable. On the other hand, Deserve Edu has no additional fees and the interest rate is 19.99% variable.
Lastly, Deserve Pro also has no annual fee, while the interest rate is 17.4% to 24.24% variable. Moreover, this credit card has the highest credit limit out of the three, as it reaches $10,000 and no deposit is required.
If you have a question, suggestion or comment, refer to the FAQ page on their website. On the other hand, you may also message the company on their social media profiles. In addition to that, you are also able to email your question to [email protected], or reach the customer support team by phone (1-800-418-7353).
Deserve has scored an excellent 4.5 out of 5 stars on their Facebook page, which means customers are overall very satisfied with the services provided. The majority of positive reviews come from the international students who are unable to get a traditional bank loan without a social security number.
However, there are negative remarks as well and they are mostly related to the company’s inability to quickly resolve issues with suspicious and unknown payments. Moreover, people seem to be very unsatisfied with the lack of a mobile app for checking transactions in real time.
Competitors and Alternatives
If you like the idea but you want to check out other companies, there are fortunately three more. These three companies have recognized the need for credit score to be built or rebuilt from scratch. Moreover, they offer credit cards to those who haven’t had contact with credit up until now.
That said, these companies are: Petal, Citi Credit Cards and Capital One.
Where to Buy?
You are able to apply for any of the Deserve credit card deals through an online form - fast and easy. However, you must be older than 18 to apply, but a U.S. citizenship is not required for the approval.
Deserve is a young company that needs to make more effort to be able to take care of their customer’s needs. However, they are committed to providing resources to the ones needing them most – young without a credit score, which makes for the majority of customers to be very satisfied.
