BetterHelp.com is the online home of BetterHelp, a company who says their goal is to provide their customers with access to quality, professional help when they are facing life's challenges so they can be happier.
The website promises that all the counselors you can be matched with through the BetterHelp website are licensed, board accredited, and qualified with either a PhD or a masters certificate in addition to years of counseling experience.
How Does It Work?
Customers will sign up for an account and fill out a short questionnaire so you can be matched with a professional counselor who can provide the support and guidance you need. Once you've created your account and been matched with a counselor, you will begin communicating with your counselor via online messages, whenever you need, on your schedule.
Customers can communicate with their counselor on an unlimited basis each week until they feel they have successfully overcome the problem or obstacle they were facing. Customers are welcome to cancel their membership at any time without penalty.
Customers can sign up, get matched, and begin speaking to your counselor all for free. Customers who decide to continue with their services will pay a flat fee of $35 per week for unlimited counseling, which gives you the ability to speak to your counselor as much as you need.
Since BetterHelp allows their customers to pay for services on a week-by-week basis, their website does not detail any overarching or general Refund Policy. Customers who feel they have an issue or complaint that warrants a refund should contact Customer Service and deal with their situation on a case by case basis.
Customer Service Contact Info
Customers who would like to contact their Customer Service team with questions, concerns, or complaints can do so by submitting them directly to their website through their Contact Us link, by phone at 888-688-9296, or by traditional mail at 440 N. Wolfe Rd, Sunnyvale, CA 94085.
The few reviews available for BetterHelp at this time tend to be very positive, and reviewers describe a very professional and beneficial experience which just happens to have the added advantage of being accessible by internet or through your mobile device.
It is still important to understand, however, that BetterHelp does not claim that they are a replacement for professional therapy or counseling. They are an additional or alternative tool that people may use if traditional therapy is difficult to schedule or cost prohibitive, but depending on the issues you are dealing with, you may still be referred to a traditional mental health professional if that's what they feel is best for your needs.
Is It Safe?
Customers who are concerned with privacy issues are assured by BetterHelp.com that their system is HIPAA compliant to ensure your privacy. They provide banking grade encryption which allows users to be completely anonymous, even to your counselor.
Competitors and Alternatives?
Online counseling is a fairly new type of service and it doesn't seem as though BetterHelp has many competitors in the market right now.

I have been using better help for only a week, but so far it's been great.I like my counselor,it she seems to really care. Customer service is incredibly helpful and genuinely nice.I will definitely recommend them!
I have found the Counselor that I am speaking to is very prompt, highly intuitive and very accurate in her assessments. As a service, I find the 7-day trial to be wonderful and I will be signing up for the weekly plan (which costs a little more than the monthly). The site is very clear on their different payment plans and that their counselors cannot diagnose or prescribe. I find that an acceptable trade in order to get what I'm after -- some professional counselling that can be done online, from the safety and comfort of my own home and all with a bit of anonymity as well. I feel the price is worth it, and the one I'm gonna go with is 40$/week, and they don't limit the number of email/chat sessions you can have with your counselor. I can speak with her as often as I like. I'm choosing weekly because I cannot afford the once monthly lump-sum; would if I could. I am so far very happy with the service and find it to be thoughtful and complete. Thank you!
I suffer from anxiety and have a hard time organizing my thoughts, and really just needed someone to talk to so that I could start helping myself. BetterHelp has been really great and convenient to me. It's cheaper than my insurance copay, and it's so much easier for me to just engage in a session from where ever I am. They matched me with a counselor that is both a woman and a person from the LGBTQ community, which is exactly what I requested. She responded within 2 days of the 7-day trial, and she always responds in a specific and helpful manner, nothing ever generic.
I feel bad for the others that had bad experiences, but I can only say good things about BetterHelp.
My therapist has been great! He's very attentive, he checks in a lot which is nice. He's been very helpful in giving me advice and helping me handle the stress of my current situation.
This is a VERY convenient and extremely accessible way to get help!! My therapist is almost ALWAYS there when I need him and I don't have to take time off work.
As a person with MS which has caused me memory issues, this is so much easier than traditional therapy in which you get an hour a week. In times of complete emotional turmoil, I found it very difficult to remember everything or find the time to talk about everything. This is GENIUS!!!!
I really trust this company. I feel like they are doing everything they can to make it a pleasant and comfortable experience. I was really worried about signing up at first because of how many companies and businesses out there offer a trial and then make it impossibly hard to sign off. With these guys, I've felt nothing but comfort and freedom. Also, the free seven day trial really helped me decide to stay with them... I just graduated college and am therefore on a really tough budget, so being able to trial for a week was entirely what sold me on staying. The ease of signing off and the free week trial is entirely what sold me to try you guys out... and it's been a good decision for me.
My counselor responds at least two to three times a day, one of the responses being, "I'm busy right now but I want you to know I read your message and I'll be sending a response tonight. Great work!" This always meant a lot to me because it always let me know that my counselor was keeping in touch and when I could expect the next message, very good! Feedback was always very genuine and incredibly helpful...
I have just started using BetterHelp, but I already feel like a newer person. I was going to have to delete my subscription, but after talking with Kevin at their finance department and explaining that I only make about $200 a week right now, they gave me 50% off of my sessions, no questions asked. I am now able to continue my therapy with my awesome therapist and I am able to afford it as well! I have high hopes that within the next few weeks I will be back on my feet and feeling good as new again! I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking to an alternative to traditional therapy. The best part is I get to talk to my therapist daily! I can tell him how my day went and we can always talk about what's going on. It's nice to have someone checking in daily that genuinely cares about your life, even though you've never even met.
I wanted this to work. I felt like there was validity in what my counselor was saying. I also felt like there were too many cues that I was dealing with a bot situation. I feel bad if my counselor was, in fact, real and did, in fact, spend time on me. She said some things that were on target. She responded in good time. But, I just can't shake this feeling----maybe it has to do with the response I got from the mediator, checking in on my experience. I said that I was concerned that it was a bot situation and the reply was very generic. Seems to me that it would say "I assure you this is not a scam and your counselor is not a bot" if, in fact, it was not.
My therapist is Megan Mackinnon. She seemed to genuinely care about me as a patient and recommended some books to read so that I could better understand my issues and from different perspectives. She was very prompt in returning my messages. The website is affordable and has at least 3 payment plans. The platform is user-friendly, too. It's very simple and straight-forward. The website isn't fluffed up or cluttered and there are no ads to interrupt you.
