Barbell Apparel was born out of a highly successful Kickstarter campaign, raising over $735,000 from over 5,000 backers. The company's goal is to grow into a premium fashion brand catering to athletic body types.
They have gained lots of media attention for their breakthrough products and the success of their fundraising efforts. The founders, Hunter Molzen and Alex Hanson, have also made an appearance on the popular business funding show, Shark Tank.
Their flagship product is the athletic fit denim jean for both men and women. The jeans are specifically designed to fit over larger muscular legs making room for bigger quads and rear ends while staying tight in the waist.
The athletic fit accommodates more than just larger bodies and the stretchy denim can be enjoyed by athletes of all sizes.
The company states their jeans have the following features:
- Superior Hybrid Denim - for limitless flexibility and comfort.
- Quality Craftsmanship
- Hand designed leather label
- Embossed branded rivets and buttons
- Stitched tags and labels,
- Custom branded pocket fabric
- Extra-strength double stitching
- And premium hanger loops.
As Barbell Apparel has grown they have added additional pieces to their inventory. They now also sell:
- Dress Pants
- Functional Dress Shirts
- Short Sleeves
- Long Sleeves
All their products are designed to fit where standard off the rack clothing would not accommodate an athletic body. At this time they are also running a promotion where you can get a free hoodie with a purchase of over $99. However this applies only while supplies last.
Sizes and Styles
The company started out with a limited offering for both sexes, that included:
Men's Jeans - Straight Athletic fit in medium or dark indigo wash. Waist sizes of 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, & 40 with 34" or 36" inseam length.

Barbell jeans are designed to fit your true waist size so keep that in mind when ordering.

Online Customer Reviews/Complaints
The company garnered a lot of favorable pre-order media buzz during their rise on KickStarter. Now that they’ve been in business for a while you can find more customer reviews of their products online.
For the most part Barbell athletic fit jeans have great reviews, you can go on their website and see what people love about their specific products. People particularly mentioned that they enjoy the extra room these pants provide for their quads.
However, there are still complaints out there that detail some of the struggles customers have undergone. These mainly have to do with finding the right fit, some people complained about the jeans being too high wasted and others thought they were too long and required tailoring.
Some of the more damning complaints stated that the material seemed thin and that the pants eventually split. There are more complaints that date back to when they were first fulfilling their kickstarter orders which may not be as relevant now.
Competitors and Alternatives
While there are many companies making Crossfit/Functional training specific workout clothing, such as Hylete and Splits59, not many brands are offering athlete tailored apparel for life outside the gym.
