John T. Reed
John T. Reed
is a popular self published author who's
books cover everything from investing in
real estate to coaching youth baseball.
He is also known for his website which may
look shoddy but actually ranks number one in
search engines for many real estate
keywords.
However, it's this website that's gotten
John T. Reed in some hot water with his
online critics, all stemming from his real
estate guru rating page. Throughout
the years he has kept a large database of
popular gurus that he has negatively rated.
The reason that there is a backlash
against reed is for his crucifixion of real
estate infomercial icons like
Carleton Sheets and
Robert T Kiyosaki. He breaks down
their books page-by-page exposing each and
every logistical or legal fault with their
ideas.
Other criticism of John T. Reed
stem from his own property ownership record,
which includes only ten properties.
This may seem low but consider that out of
all real estate authors he is the only one
that provides exact dates and addresses of
all his investment properties, something
that the infomercial guys don't even
consider doing.
I've read through Reed's site multiple
times and although I do agree that his brash
attitude might be standoffish, his guru
reviews are accurate. He doesn't
arbitrarily spout of criticism he uses his
knowledge of real estate law to point out
why others' advice is incorrect.
John T. Reed himself admits that
his website, newsletter, and books pander to
a more real estate savvy crowd than that of
the gurus he critiques. Even though he
would probably draw less negative feed back
if he toned it down a bit, he still provides
a valuable resource.

Comments to date: 3. Page 1 of 1. Average Rating: Egoist Midwest | 3:36pm on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 | I give John a true thumbs up for providing intelligent and rational advice in his ratings of the gurus. His books, while not glamorous looking, contain actual case histories and solid advice.
Several years back I sent him an email regarding my review of the most recent (at that time) Kiyosaki book and soliciting John's opinions of it. (Kiyosaki's fact checkers must have been educated at public schools, especially when Kiyosaki states that Medicare came into existence in 1955, ten years before it actually did).
John responded by saying, "There is nothing to update." Which, when you really get down to it, is the absolute truth: Nothing Kiyosaki said was worth the effort to respond.
So what if John only owned 10 properties? Does that mean his experiences are worth less than those that only exist to pitch overpriced boot camps and CDs? Check your math: Someone that has owned 10 properties is infinitely better qualified to coach you than someone who has zero.
I only disagree with John on one point: the use of professional property managers. I swear by them and could not effectively manage my properties without them since I am in a different part of the country. He raises the issue about them being in bed with overpriced contractors, suppliers and handymen. My response is that they do not proceed with any repair without my express consent and that I have veto power over that estimate obtained. In many cases I search for someone else to do the repair or replacement; or, if the cost is reasonable, I ok their recommendation. Since they manage most of my properties, I have considerable leverage with them to begin with. |
Dan Reed Fairfield CA | 12:48pm on Wednesday, August 5th, 2009 | Mr. Ball, explain how the following is "slander" or a "straw man."
"I always make offers with escape clauses. In real estate, I make an offer with the words “subject to the approval of business partner.” Most people do not know THE PARTNER IS MY CAT." (from Kiyosaki's book, Rich Dad Poor Dad)
Explain to me the value of that "metaphor." He is advocating fraud by listing a house pet as a partner.
What is disgusting is "gurus" giving bad or illegal advice to people who don't know better, unless they read reviews at johntreed.com.
Attacking the "tone" of someone's rhetoric is done when the substance is sound. There are over 600 pages on johntreed.com and only one is about Robert Kiyosaki. The page was created before I or John ever knew what search engine optimization was.
Mike Ball, you don't know what you're talking about.

Mike Ball Saginaw MI | 11:42pm on Sunday, May 10th, 2009 | John T Reed-
John may have good information but he uses a nasty style of slandering others for the profit of himself. While he does reviews on Richard Kiyosaki author of "Rich Dad Poor Dad" and other popular books he often takes stuff out of context and nit picks at what are metaphorical ideas. John reviews books in a often "Straw Man" approach where he attacks another person in order for him self to look better. Its rather disgusting. I am glad that I read some of Kiyosakis books before I read his reviews.
Kiyosaki offers alot of advice that will be very helpful to anyone who wants to become financially free. His books build vocabulary and offer knowledge not available in a class in high school nor even sometimes in college. He helps you understand a basic formula to acquire wealth.
Haven't read any of John T Reed's material but I am sure that I already don't like his approach of selling his books. (remember someone is always trying to sell you something). |
